What's New in PIVC Research: Clinically Indicated Removal

Includes a Live Web Event on 04/28/2025 at 6:45 PM (EDT)

This session reviews the evidence base and clinical practice guidelines for clinically indicated removal of peripherally inserted venous catheters (PIVCs). The learner will gain an understanding of the associated risks of leaving PIVC in place when clinically indicated for removal including risks to vessel health, and PIVC complications including phlebitis, occlusion, infiltration and infection. Attendees will also gain knowledge in the impact of policy change and the importance of implementation science and education for safe PIVC removal. At the conclusion of this session, clinicians will understand best practices for clinically indicated PIVC removal.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, learners will be able to:

• Describe the criteria used to determine clinically indicated removal of PIVCs

• Understand the evidence base for clinically indicated removal and the implications for vessel health and preservation, infection risk, and healthcare costs.

• Outline the implementation factors required to successfully adopt a clinically indicated removal policy in a health system

• Explain clinical best practice and current guidelines for ensuring safe, timely removal of PIVCs
